Member of the Church of England

MARTIN DOWN, author and former minister.

MARTIN DOWN was ordained as a minister of the Church of England in 1965. Almost all his ministry was spent in country parishes. In 1988 he was appointed to the parishes of Ashill and Saham Toney in Norfolk. Having been baptised in the Holy Spirit in 1983, Martin Down led these two country churches into charismatic renewal. The story is told in two books: Speak to These Bones (Monarch 1993) and Streams of Living Water (Monarch 1996). As a result of a dispute over the reordering of the medieval church, the Fountain of Life congregation came into being in the local community centre. Eventually the church was able to buy the local garage and convert it into a new purpose-built worship centre in Ashill. This story and its lessons for the wider church are recorded in Building a New Church Alongside the Old (Kingsway 2003).

Martin Down retired in 2005, but continues to teach and preach occasionally at the Fountain of Life, where he and his wife Maureen continue as members. In retirement Martin devotes much of his time to writing.

Martin Down’s latest books are: Deluded by Darwinism? (Kingsway 2007) and The New Jerusalem (VIP 2008).

The first two of Martin’s books are out of print, but can often be found on Amazon. Building a New Church Alongside the Old, Deluded by Darwinism, and The New Jerusalem are available through bookshops and on the internet via Amazon or Wesley Owen.
